    Alexis Weissenberg, a French pianist of Jewish-Bulgarian descent, began his musical journey at the age of three. By the age of eight, he had already given his first piano concert. Born in 1929 in Sofia, Bulgaria, Alexis showed a natural talent for music from a young age.

    Escape and Imprisonment


    In 1941, Alexis and his mother attempted to flee from Nazi-occupied Bulgaria to Turkey. However, their plan was foiled, and they ended up spending three months in a concentration camp. Even during his imprisonment, Alexis continued to play music, entertaining others by performing Schubert's compositions on a German accordion. Eventually, Alexis and his mother managed to reach Istanbul.
