    Canova visited Rome in 1779 and 1781 and reached a turning point in his style. He studied antiquities and visited the studios of the Roman restorers Bartolomeo Cavaceppi and Francesco Antonio Franzoni. He also came under the influence of English neo-classicist Gavin Hamilton and other avant-garde artists.
